Interstate 10 was the scene of a fiery accident between a charter bus carrying a cheerleading squad and a commercial truck.
At first, it was believed that there were no injuries; however, it was later reported that four people were injured in the accident. This included the driver of the bus, as well as three cheerleaders.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), all of the injured individuals were transported by ambulance to Desert Regional Medical Center for treatment.
The accident occurred at approximately 4:15 p.m., in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 10. Reports note that the bus driver slowed the vehicle in the number one lane as he approached stopped vehicles.
Traveling in the number two lane, the truck driver was unable to stop his vehicle before reaching the slow down. Upon hitting the brakes to avoid a collision, the driver turned the truck to the left. This lead to the collision with the bus.
From there, the truck went through the center median and ended up in the westbound lanes of Interstate 10. Fortunately, it did not collide with any other vehicles.
As emergency crews made their way to the scene and the crash was cleaned up, traffic backed up for several hours. It wasn't until 10 p.m. that both directions were once again open to traffic.
Traveling on the highway can be extremely dangerous. This is especially true when doing so in a bus, where seat belts and other safety devices, such as airbags, are not available. In the event of a collision, this type of accident always has the potential to cause serious injury or even death.
