Property owners must keep their property safe

Property owners are expected to keep their property safe, as to prevent injury to guests, licensees and even trespassers.

It goes without saying that property owners owe a different degree of care to each category of people. For example, property owners owe the highest protection to guests, as to make sure they are safe at all times. Conversely, it's much more difficult to keep trespassers safe, as they are not on the property with permission.

In short, property owners are expected to repair and correct any known dangers, such as cracks in sidewalks and driveways that could act as a trip hazard.

Since there is no exact way of saying what should and shouldn't be done to keep people safe, homeowners should err on the side of caution. In other words, it's better to be safe than sorry.

Were you injured when visiting someone's home? When you visit a person's home, such as a family member or friend, you don't expect to suffer an injury. Unfortunately, this could happen when you least expect it, thus putting you in a difficult position.

While you don't want to take legal action, especially if you know the person well, it's within your right to do so.

The best thing you can do is learn more about the cause of the accident, as well as if the homeowner did anything to attempt to protect you. From there, focus on your injuries, long-term prognosis and legal rights. This will help you decide which steps to take in an attempt to put the incident in the past once and for all.
