Uh oh, it’s getting foggy out there

You wake up in the morning with the idea of hopping in your car, hitting the road and getting to work on time (for once). And then you realize that it's so foggy that you can't even see your hand in front of your face.

Of course, since you have places to be, you can't sit at home and wait for the fog to clear. Instead, you need to navigate the road all while doing whatever you can to remain safe.

Even though foggy conditions can make it difficult to drive, there are a few tips you can follow to reach your destination without incident:

  • Slow down as much as necessary. If you can't see where you're going, the best thing you can do is slow down until conditions improve.
  • Use your headlights. This can brighten the road ahead, while also making your vehicle more visible to other drivers.
  • Use the lane markers to guide you. For example, you can hug the line on the right side of the road (if you're in the right lane) to ensure that you don't get too close to vehicles in the left lane.

Sometimes, you know it's foggy before you ever get behind the wheel. Other times, the fog sets in somewhere on your journey. Either way, you need to adjust your driving style to lessen the likelihood of an accident.

If you are part of an accident, move to safety and stay in your vehicle until help arrives. You don't want to get out, as this could result in a follow-up accident in which you're struck by another car. As always, your safety comes first.
